Erik Morales takes on Danny Garcia in first WBC light welterweight title defence bout – Boxing news
Erik Morales, the current World Boxing Council (WBC) light welterweight champion, will defend his gold against Danny Garcia, the current WBO Intercontinental light welterweight champion, in a 12-round bout on March 24, 2012.
The bout will headline the pay-per-view put forth by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions and the ring will be stretched at Reliant Arena situated in Houston, Texas, United States. The event will be co-headlined by the non-title skirmish between Jose
Miguel Cotto and Jose Luis Castillo.
Erik recently completed his training session for the epic clash and in a short interview told that he has trained extremely hard for the fight since he completely understands Danny’s brawling abilities.
Morales, infamous as the ‘El Terrible’, has a huge experience in his gear and boasts wins over many big names. Erik has been in a total 59 bouts and came out victorious in 52. He has collected a whopping 36 of his wins by knockout.
Erik is one of those prolific pugilists who were successful to pin the legendary Filipino flash Manny Pacquiao. Unfortunately in the next two bouts against the ‘Pacman’, Erik lost his cool and lost both by knockout.
Erik, in his last engagement nailed Pablo Cesar Cano and grabbed the vacant WBC light welterweight title, the gold which Morales will defend for the first time against Danny Garcia.
Danny, widely known as the ‘Swift’, is on a long undefeated win streak. The 23-year-old lad has been in a total 22 bouts and resides at the sixth position in world rankings. The young orthodox recently collected a split decision in his favour against Kendall
Holt and grabbed the vacant WBO Intercontinental light welterweight gold.
Danny and Erik both are pugilists of equal calibre. The only facet that gives Erik an upper hand over Danny is his experience and he even mentioned it in his short interview.
Erik has fought with world’s best pugilists though he lost some of those bouts yet experience and mistakes are something that he did learn in those brawls. Danny, on the contrary, has just started to pop out in the ace ranks of the light welterweight division.
It must also be kept in mind that this will be Danny’s first ever 12-round bout.
The veteran Erik after ending his sparring session at the mountainous regions of Mexico said, “Once more I did this high altitude camp. I need to keep the speed now. Garcia is young and I have to respect his youth but my experience will be the difference
to get the win.”
The event will also have another charismatic clash between Carlos Molina and James Kirkland. The light middleweight brawl will decide the semi finalist who will later take on Vanes Martirosyan in the WBC final elimination bout.
