Erik Morales thinks his reign has ended and retirement is on the cards – Boxing News
At the Reliant Arena, Danny Garcia successfully grabbed the WBC super lightweight title from former four-division world champion Erik Morales via 12-round unanimous decision. Even though initially Morales looked in control, Garcia made a comeback in the
third round with an overhand right.
After the fight, in the post-bout conference, Morales, who was feeling dejected, announced that he might consider retirement after being brutally beat by a young fighter like Garcia. According to Morales, his time is over and he does not have the same passion
and aggression he once did. He iterated, “Tonight I fought a young, hungry fighter. Time has passed, and I have to evaluate if I'm going to keep doing this. I'm not going to keep fighting to lose. If I'm going to fight, I want to win.”
By the third round, it was quite clear that Garcia is the more aggressive and speedy fighter, however Morales did do a good job of defending himself in the fourth and fifth round. He then made a quick comeback in the later rounds, when the fight started
to look square. However, unfortunately Morales fell victim to Garcia’s aggression in the 11th round and was knocked out.
On Morales’ performance, Garcia remarked, “I just went 12 rounds with a legend. A lot of people don't get that chance to fight a legend. I watched him growing up, and it was an honor to be in there with him.”
Most fans and associates were sympathising Morales, on which the former champion said, “Don't feel sad for me. I'm happy. I feel that I fought with dignity, a lot of pride and I put on a good performance. I never ducked anybody.”
Garcia further said that he knew the fight was going to be a tough one but he knew that he would win. The high-spirited youngster claimed that he had foreseen this victory for long and this was the best moment of his life. He added that defeating Morales
was his dream and that he has finally achieved it, even though he has always respected Erik for his accomplishments.
