Erik Morales to take on Danny Garcia for the 2nd time, why and to prove what – Boxing Special
Danny Garcia, Angel Garcia’s proud son, the current WBC and WBA world light welterweight champion and above all the man who literally chopped Amir Khan’s head off his shoulders, is back in action against arch rival Erik Morales to prove that he is the best
and must not be underestimated at all.
The Philadelphia proud Danny is flying sky high after his recent explosive and quite frankly upset win over Amir Khan, the former WBA world light welterweight champion, who was unanimously the favourite.
But at the end of the day, to be specific at the end of the fourth round, it was Danny screaming on the top rope of his corner, giving a hidden message to all his opponents and especially those who never considered him a pugilist, that he is a lethal pounder
and a bitter reality in the top divisional ranks, possessing the ability to nail any one in a dominating fashion.
Garcia junior was coming off a unanimous decision win over veteran Erik Morales. The bout had the vacant WBC light welterweight title on the line. In that March 2012 clash, Danny was, as always, considered as the underdog so much so that no one was ready
to bet on the 24-year-old.
The dismal scenario did not let the Pennsylvanian lose his hope and above all faith in his own skills as a result after the 12-round battle, Danny was enjoying the taste of his first ever world title win.
In that bout, Danny, well known for being a slow starter, picked gait in the last rounds so much so that Morales succumbed to the American’s powerful jabs and got flattened on the ring floor.
The huge 59-bout experience came to aid the veteran and though he immediately stood up yet was unable to perform well. The judges awarded the bout to Danny with huge score difference.
Erik was unhappy so much so that he did not even shook Danny’s hand before leaving the ring. Even then the rumours started to circulate that Morales wants a rematch but all the fuss got ironed by the epic Amir Khan-venture.
Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy Promotion’s man behind many classic bouts, in a recent media interaction revealed that Danny will now take on Erik Morales for one more time at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on October 20, 2012.
Schaefer along with the announcement also stated the reason why Erik is most probably interested in a rematch. Richard commented, “The main event is going to be Danny Garcia, obviously the Puerto Rican from Philadelphia, and Erik Morales, the Mexican. Erik
feels that in his last fight, that when he came off of [gall bladder] surgery, he wasn’t at his best. He’s convinced that he’s going to beat Danny Garcia this time around, and you have the classic Puerto Rican-Mexican showdown.”
The above statement proves one thing that Erik is not willing to accept the defeat from a 24-year-old who has not nailed many big names except his and now Amir Khan. Furthermore, there are several significant aspects that raise questions on Erik’s form,
physique and above all rematch decision.
Richard said that Erik believes he can nail Danny and was unable to do so because of the surgery. Well, if he was not fit then why the Mexican pounder took the fight in the first place?
Secondly, Erik did not get many punches on his ‘Gall-Bladder’ portion which might have given advantage to the American in the very early rounds. Thirdly, did Danny know about the surgery or not, well most probably not.
Last but not the least, there is no reason for the bout-makers to throw Garcia against a man who he has already beaten with sheer domination and authority. The only possible reason understandable is that nobody was either willing to collide with Danny or
was either unavailable.
The second clash will also have the same result and this time most probably Danny might go for a knockout as he is now well aware of the former world champion’s style.
Erik will face the very same problems, most significant being the aging and therefore the slower pace issue. Danny will again come out of the ring victorious as he has already said several times ‘you have to kill me to win over me’.
Therefore, the current engagement is baseless and there was no need for a sequel as the result would be the same no matter what Erik says and what he thinks a loss is a loss and Morales lost the bout to the better man.
