Famed "phonometrograph" Erik Satie went into military service after he got kicked out of music school, but soon quit via "deceptive means" (says wiki). What is the story here? How did he get out of service after signing up?

  1. He used two ruses:

    1) He persisted with his studies at the Paris Conservatoire studies so that he could get away with one year's military service instead of the usual five - even though he hated studying, was lazy and got terrible reports from the professors there.

    2) In April 1887 Satie deliberately contracted bronchitis to get himself invalided out of the army for that remaining year.
