Erika De Souza Machado leads Brazil past Jamaica 73-50 - FIBA Americas Championship for women
Erika De Souza Machado punctuated a team-high 19 points as Brazil cruised past Jamaica 73-50 at the FIBA Americas Championship on Monday, September 26, 2011. The Brazilians are now heading the Olympic qualifying tournament on the
back of three consecutive victories.
De Souza Machado also grabbed seven rebounds, stole the ball four times, and dished out three assists in the victory. She went 6 for 13 from the field. Three other Brazilian players reached double figures in the game. Damiris Dantas
added 12 points and five rebounds while Palmira Marcal had 11 points and two steals in the victory. Patricia de Oliveira also ended the game with 10 points, three rebounds and two steals for the winners.
For Jamaica, Vanessa Gidden recorded a double-double in the defeat, scoring a game-high 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Gidden, who plays for Minnesota Lynx, went 8 for 18 from the field and 7 for 9 from free throw line. Nicole
Louden was the second leading scorer for the Jamaicans with 10 points and two rebounds.
Brazil shot 43.3 percent (29 for 67) from the field and 54.5 percent (12 for 22) from free throw line while Jamaica shot just 34 percent (18 for 53) from the floor and 70.6 percent (12 for 17) from the line. Additionally, Jamaica
committed 24 turnovers as compared to only 13 by the Brazilians, who also dished out 20 assists.
Brazil were in their groove from the very start. They opened the first quarter with five straight points and then established a foothold in the game at 22-10, with 02:22 to go in the quarter. Jamaica did manage to cap the quarter
with three points, trimming their deficit to nine points, 22-13, heading into the second. Brazil faced a little more resistance in the next ten minutes, but they played solid defence to limit the Jamaicans to 12 points, stretching their advantage to 38-25
at halftime.
However, the game was effectively over by the end of the third period when the Brazilians outscored Jamaica 18-9, making it 56-34. Brazil maintained their double-digit lead throughout fourth quarter and earned the win by a huge
margin of 23 points, 73-50.
