Erika De Souza Machado leads Brazil to a 88-61 victory over Mexico: FIBA Americas C’Ship for Women
On Tuesday, September 27, 2011, Erika De Souza Machado led all scorers with 22 points and six rebounds as Brazil beat Mexico 88-61 in their Group B clash at the FIBA Americas women's Basketball Championship. It was Brazil’s fourth
consecutive victory in the tournament and a third straight defeat for the Mexicans.
De Souza Machado, who is averaging 16 points and 6.5 rebounds per game so far in this tournament, shot 8 for 14 from the field and 6 for 7 from free throw line. Adriana Pinto added 13 points, four rebounds and three assists while
Franciele Nascimento ended the game with 11 points and six rebounds in the victory.
Alexis Castro led Mexico with 17 points on 3 for 8 shooting from the floor and 11 for 12 from free throw line. Castro also pulled down a game-best eight rebounds, dished out four assists and stole the ball twice. Erika Gomez had
16 points, hitting 5 for 6 from free throw line, and six rebounds in the loss. However, besides the performances of these two, there was not much to take home for the Mexicans.
The Brazilians went 29 for 72 (40.3 percent) from the field and 26 for 32 (81.2 percent) from free throw line, limiting the Mexicans to only 18 for 55 (32.7 percent) from the floor and 20 for 24 (83.3 percent) from the line. The
South Americans also committed only 12 turnovers while Mexico committed 23 and thrashed Mexico 46-31 on the glass.
Brazil opened the first quarter on a 7-0 run and pushed their lead to 15 points, 24-9, with 01:38 to go in the quarter. Brisa Silva however responded with a pair of free throws at that point and cut Brazil’s lead to 24-11, heading
into the second frame. Brazil maintained their energy levels in the next ten minutes and once again outscored the Mexicans 21-13 to carry a 45-24 lead into the locker room.
Things didn’t change much after the break and the Brazilians continued to clobber the Mexicans defense and stretched their lead to 28 points, 65-37, by the time, the third quarter ended. Mexico tried to cut the deficit down early
in the fourth quarter, but Brazil were just too good for them. They never gave the Mexicans a sniff and romped to a 27 point win.
