Eriko Hirose and Sayaka Sato enter into Women’s Singles quarter-finals of the US Open GP Gold 2011
Japan’s Eriko Hirose and Sayaka Sato penetrated into the Women’s Singles quarter-finals after winning their round-of-16 matches in the US Open GP Gold 2011, at Orange, California, on Wednesday, July 13.
The fifth seed, Hirose defeated Hong Kong’s Ying Suet Tse in straight games, whereas, the eighth seed, Sayaka managed to win against her team-mate Mitani Minatsu in a three-set contest.
World Number 17, Hirose, delivered a superb performance against the spirited Ying Suet and won the battle in 39 minutes, whereas, World Number 19, Sayaka, had to dig deep into her reserves to beat Mitani in a rubber-set match of 47 minutes.
Hirose opened the game in an authoritative manner against the Hong Kong Shuttler, who was also playing to her full potential. It was the most thrilling fights of the day, as both shuttlers progressed equally in the opening set.
The top-quality badminton from both sides pushed the score at the breathtaking stage of 23-23. At this crucial stage, the Japanese played superb badminton by waiting for the right opportunity and finished the set by a 25-23 margin, in 24 minutes.
In the following game, Hirose kept her control over the rallies by playing perfect badminton. She continued her better play in this pre-quarter-final match and clinched the set by a 21-18 margin, in 15 minutes. The end result of this round-of-16 match was
25-23 and 21-18.
In another pre-quarter-final battle, Sayaka played shaky badminton in the opening set where her rival was controlling the pace of the game. Mitani stunned the higher ranked shuttler in the first game, where Sayaka committed many errors and lost the set by
a 12-21 margin, in only 14 minutes.
Sayaka made a powerful comeback in the second game, where she thrashed Mitani in 18 minutes with a margin of 21-15. She continued her better performance in the final game and spared no chance for her challenger to control proceedings. Sayaka finished the
deciding set with the score of 21-16, in just 15 minutes. The end result of this entertaining battle was 12-21, 21-15 and 21-16.
