  1. yeah i thought you were John H (sorry bout that lol) anyway  It is not about quality of fighters, it is about average skill level. The average fighters in the fifties and forties did not use the jab very well and their combination punching was limited guys like marciano, louis, charles and walcott were ABOVE the average....are you trying to say that guys like rex layne and don cocknell would stand a chance against gerry cooney and ray mercer or even wladimir klischko?...that's what i mean, the average heavyweight from the 80's to the 2000's is more polished and skilled mostly because they can watch tapes of old fighters from previous eras and learn to avoid the same mistakes moreover they have better training facilities and better nutrition, it's the same in every sport even baseball, babe ruth is still one of the greatest hitters ever and cy young and still one of the best pitchers but the average baseball pitchers of today can do more than the pitchers of old look at ryan nolan and maddux and the same goes for hitters, back in the day babe ruth was like the only guy that consistently hit homeruns while the others settled for pinch hits, today all the top guys and DH"s hit a lot of homeruns or at least a reasonable amount...that's what i mean, the average skill level has increased as time went on. and trust me...boxing is not dying, it is simply in a slump because no one is unifying the title but i have seen it happen many times before people have been saing that boxing is dying for a long time even in the fifties people said it...they said that marciano was the guy that saved boxing after joe louis retired and then came ali,and after him came tyson....sooner or later another champ will emerge and bring the popularity back, it happens every ten - twenty years and moreover boxing is very popular wordlwide, the philippones watch manny pacquiao and idolize him, cotto and the others are doing their thing at the welterweight level and Pavlik is breaking the whole stereotype of the great white hype at middleweight all these guys are still keeping boxing up, all we need is a heavyweight champion that is willing to unify the titles the way tyson did back in the 80's and i am sure that someone somewhere in a gym in america is training ready to step into the ring and create a new legend.
