High School State Championships
Erin Oeltjen of Millard West and William Raynor of Creighton Prep stunned their supporters by acquiring gold medals of Girls and Boys 100yard backstroke respectively on day two of the Nebraska High School State Championships for Boys and Girls in Lincoln
on February 28.
Oeltjen experienced ruthless aggression of Meredith Wekesser of Lincoln Southeast throughout the backstroke swim, but with her irresistible struggle, she succeeded in edging her out on the finishing end for gold medal.
She made her way to the victory stand for gold medal by submitting a wonderful time of 58.11 seconds. She remained just 0.05 seconds ahead of Wekesser, who followed her on the podium for silver medal by reporting a second fastest time of 58.16 seconds.
Similarly, BreighAnne Lawrence of Omaha Duchesne transpired on the finishing wall for third finest spot of the event. Lawrence remained 2.03 seconds behind her former finisher and ended her race in a time of 1 minute and 00.19 seconds. She was followed by
Emma Ebito of Lincoln East, who was almost 0.50 seconds away and emerged on the finishing blockade with an effort of 1 minute and 00.74 seconds.
In the meantime, Raynor occupied gold medal of the Boys similar event by clocking an effort of 49.43 seconds. With his scintillating form, he was in a lead of 0.49 seconds over his subsequent swimmer, Bob Glover of Millard South. Glover seized second position
of the backstroke discipline by hitting the wall with an effort of 49.92 seconds.
He remained 3.69 seconds ahead of Nicholas Kirklin of Elkhorn/Elkhorn South, who secured third finishing spot of the event and stepped on the medal rostrum with an effort of 53.61 seconds. The fourth best spot of the event was obtained by Kirklin’s team-member,
Michael Stein, who was 0.68 seconds slower from surpassing his former finisher and tapped the wall with the timing of 54.29 seconds.
Oeltjen and Raynor were contented with their stupendous efforts in the backstroke disciplines. In addition, the spectators acknowledged gruelling efforts of all participants whereas the podium finishers collected their medals at the prize distribution ceremony
of the champion.
