Erislandy Lara collects unanimous win over veteran Freddy Hernandez – Boxing News
Erislandy Lara, the former WBA Fedelatin light middleweight champion, grabbed a unanimous decision win over his Saturday night opponent, Freddy Hernandez, the former WBC Latino welterweight champion in a 10-round non-title bout held on June 30, 2012.
The duo met on the undercard of the fight card headlined by the IBF light middleweight title bout between Cornelius Bundrage and Cory Spinks. The pay-per-view was organised and promoted by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions and was televised live
on Showtime’s weekly Saturday night boxing show.
The night was co-headlined by the non-title 10-round clash between Gary Russell Jr and Christopher Perez. Lara, 29, was entering the ring as an underdog. The Cuban number one boasted 16 wins in a total of 18 bouts with 11 coming via knockout.
Despite being seriously overshadowed by Freddy’s experience, Lara did not show any kind of intimidation and authoritatively dominated the bout from the very first round. Moreover, Lara was coming off a spectacular win over decently experienced Ronald Hearns.
Freddy, 33, on the other hand, was entering the career’s 34th bout, boasting 30 wins. The Mexican veteran not only had the experience edge over Lara but also possessed a better knockout ratio.
The orthodox Freddy, also known as ‘The Rail’, has nailed 20 of his opponents by knockout and was coming off a unanimous decision win over Luis Collazo. The odds were heavily in favour of Hernandez but luck did not seem to favour him.
Lara started things off in a convincing way and did not allow Freddy much leverage so as to throw his trademark powerful knockout jabs. Hernandez tried his level best and at some stages got irked by the slow evasive stance followed by Lara.
During the middle rounds, Freddy in great frustration converted the bout into a mere brawl and started throwing jabs aimlessly in great anger. After the seventh or eighth round, Lara again started to control the pace of the bout as Freddy remained sluggish
and with the passage of time got fatigued.
The last rounds were completely won by Lara as he connected with great ease well targeted jabs and stunned Freddy every now and then. Lara truly proved that since he lies in the top 10 divisional ranks therefore he genuinely has the ability to create problems
for even the best names in the division.
With the tenth round bell, Lara was announced as the winner by the scores 95-94, 98-91, and 99-90. Erislandy allowed Freddy only two rounds to win and in all the remaining eight rounds successfully came out victorious.
With this victory, Lara has collected his 17th career win whereas Freddy has unfortunately received his third career loss.
