Erling Holmberg of Shanklin Sailing Club wins 2011 Windsport Catparts Sprint 15 Traveller Series
Shanklin Sailing Club’s Erling Holmberg displayed impressive sailing skills at Grafham Water Sailing Club to claim the 2011 Windsport Catparts Sprint 15 Traveller Series victory by 14 points in the handicap race. The Windsport Catparts Traveller Series for
2011 has now officially come to an end at Grafham with the largest attendance of the summer.
As the series began, nine travellers joined 10 locals under sunny weather with light breezes at Marconi. The locals were delighted as Kevin Kirby won the meet over David Ball and Jenny Ball. Kevin Kirby also won the long distance event – the ever popular
figure of eight course round Northey and Osea Islands.
The Southern Nationals event was held at Shanklin with 13 locals and 14 visitors. Winds were pleasant on the first day but became stronger and gusty on Day 2. Due to such a tough forecast on second day, only one race commenced and seven sailors crossed the
finish line.
The third event of the series, Seasalter, commenced under the forecast of heavy rain and wind that possibly put off a few knots. In the Seasalter event, 18 travellers joined seven locals for some fun sailing where National Champion, Kevin Dutch, showed his
pace and won over Erling Holmberg.
Overall, the series victory was clinched by events secretary, Erling Holmberg, beating the second placed, Jon Finch, by a sizable margin. Finch of Stewartby Water Sports Club earned 28 points to claim the second spot followed by Robert England of Carsington
Sailing Club on third podium position with 31 points.
