Ernie Els: a true gentleman
Ernie Els is a South African professional golfer who has proven himself time and again. Formally, he has also been on the number one spot on the official golf ranking. Els was born on 1969 and turned professional in the year 1989.
He won his first major title in the year 1994. At the time, he was only 25 years old. After that, he bagged three more major titles.
His last major title was in the year 2012, when he won the British Open Championship. The event took place for the 141st time. It was held at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf course for the 11th time.
He is the third South African who won this major. Before Els, it was won by Bobby Locke and Gary Player.
The Open was a very close match between Ernie Els and Adam Scott. The last round collapse of Scott cost him the game. He was crushed after that loss in the end. He could have easily won the trophy but the end was very unfortunate for the player.
Ernie Els was very considerate about Adam, who lost the match by just one stroke. He mentioned his misfortune twice, first, right after winning the event and secondly, during the official presentation of the tournament, when he was given the claret jug.
Els felt truly sorry for his fellow competitor. He described him as a brilliant golfer and a good friend of his. He added that he is sure that in near future Adam Scott will get many opportunities to win the majors.
He then thanked all the people who had helped him out and made this victory possible. He started off with his family and thanked his father and wife first.
Then he moved on to his coaches, he mentioned their names as they had worked as hard as him. He also mentioned the former President and a great patriot of South Africa.
“We have much to thank Mandela,” Els said. “He played a huge role in peacefully making South Africa the place it is today and I am grateful for the way we (the country’s sportsmen and women) have benefited”.
