Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington set to make good start in 2012
Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington are in the same group at the Volvo Golf Champions that started on January 19, at The Links at Fancourt, George, South Africa. Both players are disappointed for being ranked below 50.
Both professionals joined the 35-champion squad, on Thursday, and will be competing against the world leaders for the title. These 35 champions brought 392 victories in total, with 14 majors.
Ernie Els, the 42-year-old South African professional golfer, worked hard last year on the green. His world ranking dropped to the 71st position because of a worse-than-expected performance.
“I would like to really turn things around this year and see if I can win some tournaments again,” he said.
Els wants to be back in the top 50. His average performance did not help him qualify for the Masters, scheduled in April 2012.
Only players within the top 50 will be given a chance to play in the most leading tournament of golf.
The same is the case with the 40-year-old Irish professional, Padraig Harrington. He is facing the same issues as Els.
Both of them are looking forward to fixing the mistakes they made in the last season andwinning some major events.
Harrington is at the 89th position according to OWGR and he did not qualify for the selected field of the Masters either.
This was the most disappointing factor for both golfers, as they have been dropped from the selected golfers list.
“It doesn't worry me in the greater scheme of things, because I know you can't win them every year. You have to sit there and be patient and wait for your turn - and like 2007 and 2008, they all come at once,” Harrington said.
Els has won three majors in the past and 68 professional wins. Similarly, Harrington is also a three-time major winner with 26 total wins.
They want to win back the honour of the major titles once again. For that, they are planning and striving to improve their world rankings in order to find a place within the top 50.
Both the players have ample chances to record their career opening victory at the Volvo Golf Champions and boost their rankings.
A successful start will motivate both golfers to record and display professional golfing skills in the current season.
