Ernie Els and Rory McIlroy opt out of PGA Grand Slam of Golf
The authorities at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf got a major setback when it was announced that the British Open Champion Ernie Els and, the current world number one and the PGA Champion, Rory McIlroy have decided to opt out of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
PGA Grand Slam of Golf is a 36-hole exhibition tournament, which is played on the island of Bermuda. Played at the Port Royal Golf Club, the winner gets hefty prize money of $600,000.
This is, however, not an official tour event and the field is only limited to four players. The four major winners of the year get the invitation to play in Bermuda.
Ernie Els decided not to play at Port Royal Golf Club because the doctors have advised him some rest for his sprained ankle.
The South African is not taking any risks with his ankle, especially with a WGC event coming up, he is hoping to be fully fit in time.
The ankle sprain is not very serious but rest is still required for it to heal properly. Ernie was replaced by a European, Padraig Harrington.
Rory McIlroy, on the other hand, decided not to play in Bermuda because of his commitments on the European Tour.
The world number one is currently in China for the BMW Masters, and then WGC-HSBC Champions is also in China. So he needs some rest to play on these big events.
The Northern Irishman is currently chasing the money tour list on the both the PGA Tour and European tour.
With back to back victories in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and the victory at Kiawah Islands, the European Ryder Cupper leads Tiger Woods in money list on the PGA Tour.
However, on the European Tour he has not had a victory this season, apart from the US PGA Championship that he won.
With the season coming to a close, Rory is trying to get more events under his belt in a bid to lead the money list on the European tour as well.
McIlroy will be eyeing the title at the BMW Masters and a victory here could prove to be very vital for the current world number one.
