Ernie Els bags the European Tour award for the month of July
Since winning the Open Championship, Ernie Els has not been in the best of forms. He missed the cut at the RBC Canadian Open and finished way below at T45 in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
However, his recent dip in form could not stop the European Tour from giving him the player of the month award for the month of July.
This was awarded to Ernie, primarily, on the basis of his Open Championship victory. The magnificent show at the Royal Lytham by the Big Easy was just enough to earn him this award. It was his second Open victory, the first one being in 2002.
Ernie Els was extremely happy after receiving this award,
"It is always nice to be named Golfer of the Month - it usually means you have done something pretty good and in my case this time it was for a very special achievement in my career," said Els.
Els said that he never expected Adam to fail in such a dramatic way. He hoped that he would end up in a two way play off with the Australian, Adam Scott, but stars were shining bright for 42-year-old South African.
“The whole thing happened quite fast after I finished that final round. I have to say that I was praying to get in a play-off, but then it finished the way it did”.
However, the Big Easy had some sympathies for the young golfer. He believes that Adam has the game to take him to a major glory and that his time will surely come one day.
He stated, "Obviously I still feel for Adam Scott, but this one came my way for once. You lose a lot more than you win as a professional and I am sure Scotty's time will come in a Major".
The South African has been flying high since winning the Open Championship. His performances on the course have experienced a slight dip but that is mainly due to the media attention and the charity work that is going on.
Since winning the Open, Els have been signing sponsorships deals and getting sponsor for his charity work, which he has setup to improve the lives of children suffering from Autism.
