Ernie Els believes that Lee Westwood’s best chance to win a major is this year
Lee Westwood, the third best golfer in the world, has not won a major yet. The Englishman’s best finish was a runner-up at the 2010 Masters and the Open Championship.
In his 19-year long career, Lee has seen many ups and down but he has always been noted for his consistency.
However, three-time major winner, Ernie Els believes that this might be the year for Westwood to win his first Open crown and become the first Englishman to win the Open since 1969.
The Big Easy thinks that Lee has seen the high’s and low’s of his career and the Royal Lytham and St Anne golf course suits his game perfectly.
Royal Lytham and St Anne course is a paradise for long range drivers and Lee’s driving is also very strong. He is one of the best drivers around.
"Lee has paid his dues, he deserves to win one," said Els. "He is not running out of time, this could be his week".
Els thinks that Lee would need just a hint of luck to claim this title. Ernie, who won the Open in 2002, believes that apart from Lee, the fellow Englishman Luke Donald also has the chance to end the English victory drought at the Open.
"It is all there, he just needs a bit of luck," claims Els. "His time will come one day." Donald too has not won a major in his career, although he is currently the world number one golfer.
Lee Westwood had an injury scare at the French Open but he is good shape now.
"I am fine," Lee said, while talking to media after French Open. "There is no problem. It was a slight strain and it is a lot easier now. It will not be a factor when Royal Lytham comes round".
The Open starts on the 19th of July and both Lee Westwood and Luke Donald will be looking to come up to the expectations of home support.
Being one and three in the world rankings, the English people and media have very high hopes from both of these players. Els is right – this could be their chance as they have been in good form recently.
