Ernie Els commits to play in the Iskandar Johor Open
Ernie Els, has been added to the published field of the Iskandar Johor Open, slated to start from December 13, 2012. The reigning British Open Champion is one of the strongest additions to this year’s season-ending Asian Tour event.
The Iskandar Johor Open is one of the fastest growing tournaments in Asia, and is known for attracting some of the best golfers from different parts of the world. In 2007, the inaugural edition of the event offered a total prize fund of US$300,000,
which has now increased to US$2 million.
For the first three years, the tournament was staged at the Royal Johor Country Club, and was then moved to the prestigious Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club in, 2010.
The South African is now relishing the opportunity of playing in one of the most followed events on the Asian Tour, and is confident to maintain his form to record another strong finish to the season.
“I am looking forward to playing in the Iskandar Johor Open. I’m doing a couple of golf courses around the corner from there and it’ll be a good time to be down in Malaysia,” said Els.
He added, “Middle of December, I’m not going to be playing a lot of golf. I’ll have a bit of a holiday after the event but the start of the year will be just around the corner. I like to kick start 2013 with the last event of the year, so to speak
and it’ll be very nice”.
The 43-year-old is regarded as one of the most successful players in the history of the game. This season, he is enjoying great form and is no doubt a hot-favourite to win the Johor Bahru.
Earlier this year, he recorded a come-from-behind victory in the Open Championship at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. He then tied for ninth position at the US Open, and followed that with a runner-up position at the Volvo Golf Championship.
Recently, he also participated in the last of the four World Golf Championships of the season, the HSBC Champions, and took the second spot on the leaderboard. Therefore, he will be a man to watch at the sixth staging of the event next month.
