Ernie Els fails to make his way through to Cadillac Championship with 21st place finish at Honda Open – Golf News
Ernie Els, who was looking for a good finish in the Honda Open to earn a place in the second World Golf Championship event of the year, Cadillac Championship, finished one-over par 71 to take the 21st place on the leaderboard on Sunday, March 4, 2012.
This also confirmed that he does not have any chance to play in the WGC tournament to be held next week at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, Doral, Florida, USA.
According to the player, he was expecting a good finish on the final day with his name placed among the top-10 players in the tournament.
However, he was seen struggling on the PGA National Champion Course, mixing his two birdies with three bogeys in total.
Els, who is currently ranked 65th in the Official World Golf Rankings, still has a month before the line-up for the Masters Tournament finalises.
He needs to, at least, record a win or place his name among the top-50 players in the world to join the field of the major event.
However, his recent performances and other stats do not support him to recover, nor enable him to earn a ticket for Augusta National.
He is ranked 74th in Strokes Gained-Putting and 51st in making putts, which makes him a week contender in the events to come.
The player himself accepted the fact that he had been facing problems in his putting technique, which has caused him to suffer from high scores in the tournaments he plays.
Meanwhile, Els’ close friend, Tiger Woods, surged up the leaderboard with a stunning performance of an eight-under par 62 in the final round to take the second position in the tournament.
The highlights of his performance included two eagle shots, especially the one that he made with a stunning iron shot on the 18th, followed by a birdie on the 7th.
His bogey-free round included a total of four birdies and two eagles.
Els commented on Woods’ performance by saying that he looked like he was returning to his form after his electrifying performance.
"To me, it was the old Tiger back, the guy that I remember," said Els, who partnered the American. "He never missed a shot or made a bad swing".
Unlike Els, Woods will participate in next week’s Cadillac Championship at Doral.
