Ernie Els seeks to shine at Volvo Golf Champions
Ernie Els will be joining the world champions' squad at the Volvo Golf Champions, scheduled on South Africa's toughest and the finest course, The Links in Fancourt, from January 19 to 22.
This is the second year for the Volvo Golf Champions. Last year it was in The Royal Golf Club, Bahrain, and now the venue is in the other continent.
The format of the tournament is somewhat different from the others, as only the top 35 golfers are eligible to perform.
The total prize fund is €2,000,000 and the winner will earn €350,000. This tournament is also special for having the no cut rule and all the golfers will be playing till the fourth day ends. The golfer who finishes last will earn €22,000.
Last year, it was a 90-hole and a five-day tournament. However, this time it will be a four-day and a 72-hole event, where the 35 top players will be competing against each other to secure the title and money.
Ernie Els, the 42-year-old South African Professional, plays on the European Tour, Professional Golf Association Tour and at the Sunshine Tour.
His career is awash with multiple victories and glories with massive scores and strokes.
He is famous for winning the major championship three times and World Golf Championship two times.
On the other hand, he won 18 PGA tournaments and 26 European Tour events. He currently ranks 71st according to Official World Golf Rankings.
There are total eight South African golfers among the 35, who will be performing on the course.
Els has seen Charl Schwartzel, younger and the major winner, who is on the number nine of the world rankings and Louis Oosthuizen, twenty-seventh ranked, sweep past him.
Els lives at Herold's Bay, a short drive near to The Links. He is also sponsored by the German businessman, Hasso Plattner, who is the owner of the Fancourt and also runs a software company.
"I have great memories of playing at The Links, both in professional events including the (2003) Presidents Cup, and also while on family holidays here," Els wrote on his website. "It's justifiably ranked as the best golf course in the country".
January 19 will be one of the most appealing days of this year. All the top 35 golfers will tee off and their impressive strokes will increase the number of spectators as well.
