Ernie Els takes home the BMW International Open title – Golf News
South African veteran star, Ernie Els, returned to his winning ways by securing a one-stroke victory at the BMW International Open, on Sunday, June 23, 2013.
Right from the beginning of the tournament, Els held the lead in his hand, courtesy to his amazing performance in every aspect of his game. He started his campaign with a 63 on day one at the Golfclub München Eichenried and since
then, did not allow anyone in the field to surpass him on the leaderboard.
After recorded 69 in each of the second and the third round, he entered the final round sharing the lead with Alexander Levy and Alex Noren.
Noren went out of the competition early in the fourth round, as he was three over for the round through the first 11 holes. He then tried to make a comeback by recording four birdies against a lone bogey afterwards. However, it
was not enough for him to mount a title charge in Munich.
Levy, on the other hand, replicated Els’ front-nine performance to reach the turn in three-under. The back nine of the course witnessed Levy losing control over his game and Italian suffered four bogeys while adding just two shots
to his scorecard.
Els, in the meantime, held his nerves tight and finished the inward nine 36, to finish atop the leaderboard.
“It’s been wonderful,” said Els. “I’ve had a great week in Germany. We’ve got to thank BMW obviously for their 25 years of support, I’ve tried a long time to try and win this golf tournament. Wonderful to have sponsors like that
around the world, and especially on The European Tour.”
“There's a lot of people that are working behind the scenes; the volunteers, the Golf Club of Eichenried.  There's quite a lot of people getting involved in the golf course; we've got to thank all of them; and obviously my play
this week has been great. I just felt good this week,” he added.
Thomas Björn of Demark finished second on the leaderboard after carding a 17-under par tournament score, just one stroke behind the South African.
