Ernie Els upbeat about his performance at the US Open – Golf news
Open Champion Ernie Els has set his sights on adding another major golf championship to his tally, when he tees off this week at the US Open Championship, on Thursday, June 13, 2013.
The US Open is the second major golf championship of the season, which will be staged at the prestigious Merion Golf Club.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, the South African star praised the idea of staging the event at the Pennsylvania course for the first time since 1981.
Els was among the players who arrived at the venue course early this Saturday, in a bid to have a close look at the playing conditions. However, the Merion Golf Club remained closed on Saturday due to poor weather conditions.
“I actually came up here on Saturday but the course was closed, but I got to play a lot of holes on Sunday and really got a really good feel for Merion,” he said. “There are quite a few blind holes and blind tee shots out there where you've really got to
get your lines. I got that out of the way. I kind of got the flow of the course a little bit.”
“It is just a wonderful historic venue. And it's just great to be here. I think all the players feel the same way,” the four-time major champion added.
After the heavy rainfall last weekend, Els believes that he will have to drain a number of birdie putts, if he has to mount a title charge this week.
As per the initial pairings, he is scheduled to start his campaign in Ardmore with the defending champion Webb Simpson and US Amateur Champion Steven Fox.
The world number three Adam Scott, who secured his maiden major title at the Masters earlier this April, will join the world number one Tiger Woods and number two Rory McIlroy, for the first two rounds.
Scott visited the venue course three weeks before the start of the US Open, in a bid to get familiarised with the playing conditions and now believes that he will have to work really hard to post a winning score in the event.
