Ernie Els will be missing the Masters, U.S. Open
The field of the Masters Tournament was finalised on Monday, March 19, however, Ernie Els is not in the list of the 104 players.
The Masters Tournament is the first major of the year and all eyes are set on the mega event. However, Els' fans are disappointed after hearing the news that he has not received the invitation from the major officials.
"We are delighted to welcome this impressive collection of players to Augusta National Golf Club in 2012," Billy Payne, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, said.
"We are equally enthusiastic to showcase our golf course and the world's best competitors for the enjoyment of golf fans around the globe," he continued.
The 42-year-old South African professional golf player is currently ranked on the 62nd position at the Official World Golf Rankings.
The criterion for the Masters selection is different. A player can be eligible after being ranked within the top-50 golfers or by winning a PGA Tournament.
Hence, Els was disqualified for not being ranked in the top-50 and he also has not won any titles since January.
His performance in the current year has been average. He came close to winning the title of the Transitions Championship, but faced a defeat by one stroke.
Luke Donald is the proud winner of the PGA-staged event, as he defeated three other professionals in the play-off.
That was the last opportunity for Els to qualify for the Masters field, but unfortunately he missed it. The field is incomplete without him and his fans are expressing their dismay.
It is also possible that the three-time major winner will also be losing a chance to play at the US Open in June. However, an exception from the officials is now the only hope for Els.
All of these facts are letting Els down and now he appears to be less confident for the Masters and US Open.
However, despite disqualification, the South African has a chance to be in the Masters and US Open by winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, scheduled to take place from March 22 to 25.
If he wins, then he will be competing at the Masters in April and will also be making the first major of the year more competitive.
