Ernie Els wins it at the end – 141st British Championship Open
The oldest and the most prestigious golf event, the 141st British Championship Open, finally comes to an end. The venue for this event was the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Course. The four-day event started from the 19th of July and
ended on the 22nd of July.
After four days of magnificent display of golf, we finally have a Champion. The winner of the British Championship Open 2012 is Ernie Els. It was a nail biting end, nonetheless Els was successful in bagging the Claret Jug.
This is the second time Els has bagged the Claret Jug. Before this, he won the Championship in 2002. After 10 years, he has pulled off another win, this time at Lytham.
Out of the four days, the first one was the best for Els. He scored six birdies on the day and three bogeys. On the second, day he scored a par. So after two days, his score was three-under par.
On the third day, he managed to card three birdies and a bogey, which made his score five-under par. After the three days, he was six strokes behind the leader of the Championship. He needed some extraordinary luck to win it.
His start to the last day was not particularly good. He carded two bogeys on the front nine. There were no eagles or birdies on the first nine holes for Els.
At the time, only two players were left in the race for the Claret Jug - one was Els and the other was Adam Scott. Scott was still in the lead.
On the back nine, Els carded four birdies, on the tenth, twelfth, fourteenth and eighteenth hole. There were no bogeys or double bogeys for the day. He finished the fourth day with a total of seven-under par.
On the other side, Scott carded four bogeys on the last four holes. These made his score six-under par.
Els bagged the trophy at Lytham with just a one-point lead. Tiger Woods and Brandt Snedeker finished the tournament tied on the third position, as both of them ended the last day on three-under par.
