Errani/Vinci ousts Craybas/Scheepers in the second round of Women’s Doubles – US Open 2012
Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci battled past the American-South African duo of Jill Craybas and Chanelle Scheepers in the second round of the US Open 2012 on Friday. The Italians dispatched their rivals in a straight set 6-4,
6-2 and confidently moved to the third round at the USTA Billie Jean King National Center in New York, United States.
The Italian tandem overpowered their rivals and comfortably glided through the opening set. They dominated the games with their flawless serves and second deliveries. Errani and Vinci carried their top-notch form and secured
the lead by 4-2 by the middle of the set. However, their journey to the top was not an easy one, as Craybas and Scheepers tried their utmost to overpower the odds and brought the scores to 4-5 towards the end.
This aroused an alarming situation for the Italians, who desperately wanted to bag the opening set and felt threatened of the moment. The Italian participants then adopted a more aggressive game plan to reel off the next
two games and marked the set with 6-4 score.
The American-South African partners displayed good first serve accuracy than their rival duo, reaching 76 percent and grabbed 11 of 22 points on it. They could not secure the only break point presented to them. In comparison,
Errani and Vinci had a low first serve percentage of 70 and fortunately, they clamped the only break point gifted to them. They also managed to secure 17 of 19 points in the opening set which was the key reason of their triumph.
In the successive set, the American-South African veterans were unable to hold their serve in earlier on and the Italians took advantage of the opportunity to mark a 2-love lead in the next set. The scores equalized in the
fourth game, causing the Italian pair to pick up some pace in the contest. Errani and Vinci cruised through the remaining games and effortlessly wrapped up the set with a 6-2 score.
Craybas and Scheepers first serve accuracy declined to 50 percent and they nailed down one of four break points in the set to finish on the losing side in the end. Errani and Vinci had a relatively better first serve precision
of 63 percent, attaining 11 of 17 points and stinging three of the six serve breaks in the closing set.
The Italian professionals will contest against the winner of the match held between Marosi/Jurak and Mirza/Sands.
