Errani/Vinci outplay Dushevina/Stephens in the quarter-finals – New Haven Open 2011
Unseeded in the tournament, the Italian pair of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci eased through the quarter-finals of New Haven Open at Yale, defeating the combination Vera Dushevina of Russia and Sloane Stephens of the United States,
on Tuesday afternoon.
The contest was staged on the hard courts of the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Connecticut, United States, with top class women tennis players trying to get the better of one another. Errani and Vinci had no trouble
in settling out the clash in straight sets, 6-0, 7-5, taking just one hour of play to qualify for the round of four of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Series tournament.
The Italians made up a perfect combination in the matchup and stringed their individual efforts with great mastery to take down Dushevina and Stephens convincingly. Errani and Vinci kept the rallies short and professional, giving
away very few chances to their opponents to get settled in the game. The Italian pair raced through the opening set in just 15 minutes of play without any resistance from Dushevina and Stephens, who utterly failed to hold serve in any of their games.
Errani and Vinci delivered just 53 per cent of their serve on target but reeled off 20 out of 26 first serve points in the game to come out as the winner. They fully capitalized upon the error-ridden game of their opponents and
cracked in six out of seven break points in the matchup, while suffering just two from Dushevina and Stephens.
The Italian duo was off to a blistering start in the opening set and launched a series of forays upon their sloppy opponents right away. Errani and Vinci nailed three consecutive break points to absolutely blow away their opponents
from the opener, bagging the set at 6-0 to get one up in the contest.
Dushevina and Stephens regrouped in the second set and held their serve in the fourth game for the first time in the match. They registered their first serve break of the day in the fifth game but a crucial break point conversion
from the Italians wiped them out of the contest at 5-7, letting Errani and Vinci in the semi-finals of the New Haven Open at Yale.
Errani and Vinci will take on the fourth seeded Spanish pair of Nuria Llagostera Vives and Anabel Medina Garrigues, in the next round clash for a place in the final of the Premier Series tournament.
