Errani/Vinci overcome Makarova/Vesnina to claim title – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
Fifth seeded Italians, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci, battled past the Russian tandem, Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, in a three-set thriller at the Mutua Madrid Open 2012 on Saturday. They formulated a 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 score line against the Russians
to grab the title at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event taking place in Madrid, Spain.
The Italian junction showed spectacular skills to dump Makarova and Vesnina in one hour and 18 minutes. After earning this fame, Errani and Vesnina conquered the tournament.
Stepping at the sixth final of their glorious season, Errani and Vinci unleashed their true colours and reeled off the opening five games in a row before their rivals could hold on. The Italians kept their serve once more and baked a breadstick in less than
half an hour. They were never challenged with any barrier and cashed in two out of five break opportunities to inch towards the fame.
The Russians got in action in the second set and held their opening serve in the opening game to take the initial lead. They fended off the only breakpoint they faced and cashed in the lone break chance in the eighth game, eventually sealing the equaliser
by winning six games to three.
The match was poised on a knife edge but the Italians were the one who re-gained their early ascendancy. Errani and Vinci jumped to a 5-1 lead in it before carving out the victory with a 10-4 score line.
Summing up the winning team’s performance at Park Manzanares, the seeded Italians nudged up a better first serve share of 76 per cent as compared to their opponents’ 68 per cent and manipulated an impressive 26 out of 37 points on it. They also smashed two
aces and finished the match with 57 points.
Errani and Vinci avenged their last month’s Sony Ericsson Open final loss in the semi-finals before reaching this spot. They upset the fourth seeded Russians, Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova, in straight sets in two hours and seven minutes. The Italians
lost their serve once but capitalised on two out of 14 break opportunities to formulate a 7-5, 6-7(4), 10-5 success.
