Errani/Vinci overpower Date-Krumm/Zhang to lift the title – Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2012
In an epic final between the top two seeded teams, the Italian duo of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci dumped the Japanese-Chinese tandem of Kimiko Date-Krumm and Shuai Zhang in straight sets at the Whirlpool Monterrey Open 2012 on Sunday. The Italian seeds
registered a 6-2, 7-6(6) success over their opponents to earn the spotlight at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event held in Monterrey, Mexico.
The top seeded junction displayed first-class performance to stomp over the Japanese-Chinese team in an hour and 19-minutes battle. After earning this straight set victory, Errani and Vinci lifted their sixth title together and assertively progressed into
the next tournament.
"The second set had a lot of big points and we had to fight very hard," the blooming Errani was quoted. "The key was to play how we know how to play, being aggressive but also being able to change strategies when we needed to. We're so happy to win today.”
Highest ranked pair of the tournament, Errani and Vinci entered the Sierra Madre Tennis Club with poise and held their opening serve to take the initial lead. The Italians maintained consistency in their game and continued sliding remaining serves after
dusting away both breakpoints they came across. Errani and Vinci then capitalised on two out of five break opportunities and pocketed the opener with a 6-2 win.
The Italian duo kept momentum floating into the following set and broke their rivals’ serve twice. However, they saved only three out of five breakpoints they faced and subsequently dragged the set to a tie-breaker. Errani and Vinci dominated in it and clinched
the set with a 7-6(6) score line.
The Italian pair will next display their skills at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, a WTA event taking place on the clay courts in Acapulco, Mexico. Errani and Vinci are the top seeds in this tournament and are looking forward to shelve another title.
“We're going to try to carry our momentum into other tournaments, and some bigger tournaments like the Masters, Grand Slams and hopefully Olympics. It won't be easy but we're very motivated and we'll try our best," Errani added.
The winning seeds ruled throughout the week as they crushed their opponents, Alize Cornet/Alexandra Dulgheru and Janette Husarova/Katalin Marosi, with double breadsticks in the opening two rounds. In the semi-finals, they trashed the Argentinean wild card
entrants, Gisela Dulko and Paola Suarez, in straight sets to secure a spot in the final showdown.
