Errani/Vinci overwhelm Kirilenko/Petrova in the doubles quarters – Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2012
Third seed Italian duo of Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci continued to impress the tennis fans, defeating the fifth seed Russian combination of Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova, in the quarter-final round of the Internazionali BNL
d’Italia on Friday. The battle took one hour and 22 minutes to conclude, with the final score line settling at 7-5, 6-2 in favour of the Italians.
Errani and Vinci took full advantage of their home conditions and exhibited amazing coordination throughout the contest to come out as the deserving winners. They capitalised on the weak areas of their veteran opponents with great
precision, belting assertive winner through the cracks between them on regularity. The third seed Italians gave limited opportunities to Kirilenko and Petrova in the contest and backed up their aggressive approach with a rock solid baseline defence en route
to victory.
Kirilenko and Petrova registered straight sets victories in the initial rounds of the tournament and were rated among the hot favourites for winning the Rome masters title. The Russian utterly failed to deliver their best in the
Friday’s matchup and were witnessed struggling throughout the contest against the home favourites. They posed some early resistance in the match but suddenly lost all their steam in the second set to gift away an easy victory to Errani and Vinci.
Delivering 77 per cent of their serve on target, Errani and Vinci clinched 29 out of 41 first serve points in the match. They nailed five out of eight break opportunities, whilst Kirilenko and Petrova could barely register two
out of five serve breaks in the entire matchup to finish on the losing side in the end. A total of 110 points were played in the match, with the Italians winning 64 and their Russian opponents lagging behind with 46 points.
Errani and Vinci will square off against the top seed American tandem of Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond in the semi-final clash of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Saturday. The top seed Americans outplayed the combination of
Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sania Mirza in the second round before getting a walkover in the quarter-finals to book a date with Errani and Vinci.
