Errani/Vinci thrash Hlavackova/Hradecka to capture women’s doubles title – US Open 2012
Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci of Italy grabbed their second Grand Slam title by defeating Czech Republic’s Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in the US Open final on Sunday.
The Italian duo maintained their personal best run in this season, playing aggressively throughout the match. They dropped just six games in the entire contest to beat the Czech players 6-4, 6-2 in just an hour and 16 minutes.
Errani and Vinci captured the French Open title in June to become the first all-Italian team to win a Grand Slam title. By winning at the Flushing Meadows, Errani has also moved to the top of the doubles rankings and Vinci to the
second place.
Coming back to the latest match, first set was far more competitive than the second one. Errani and Vinci put pressure on their opponents from the start of the contest, breaking them in the opening game and holding their next serve
to gain a 2-0 lead. Hlavackova and Hradecka, who were bidding to win their second Major title, bounced back to level the score at 2-2. Both teams broke each other once more in the following four games to take the score to 4-4. The Italian tandem hit another
blow in the ninth and this time they made the most of it to win 6-4.
Hlavackova/Hradecka and Errani/Vinci started the second set by holding their serve in the first two games to equalise the proceedings at 1-1. The Italian combination pressed the accelerator after that, striking in the third and
seventh game to close it 6-2.
Errani accepted that they started the contested with an aggressive approach. She said, "We played aggressive today and it was good for us. It was a tough match, but it was important for us to play aggressively."
She was extremely happy on becoming the number one women’s doubles player in the world. Errani added, "It's a dream come true. We've played amazing all year - making the final in Australia and winning in Paris, and winning so many
matches on clay. We've done well on every surface this year. Of course this is an amazing achievement for us - we hope to continue."
Errani and Vinci faced each other in the quarter-finals of the singles event, which was one by the former. However, Vinci was happy for their combined success in the doubles.
She stated, "The good thing about this one is we can celebrate together. It's always better to finish winning together. It's a good thing."
Errani and Vinci have become the best doubles team recent times. They have now bagged overall 13 WTA Tour women’s double titles.
