Erratic Speed

Sometimes when I press on my sewing machine foot pedal, it sews very slowly or not at all. I have to repeatedly press down on the pedal and eventually it sews at a normal speed. Is the foot pedal going bad? I have an old New Home sewing machine, model SD-2014.
