Misfire on cylinder # 2 on a 2001 Ford Taurus 3.0L.

Already changed the plugs and wires but problem is not fixed. I've been told to change either the coil pack or the fuel injector for cylinder #2.

What advice is correct? Which one do I fix?

  1. well, to save some money, you want to figure out which one to replace...

The easiest way is to get a stethoscope, with the diaphram removed, place the tube on the cyl 2 injector with the engine running, you should be able to hear it clicking if it is good, if youre not sure, put the tube on another injector and see if the clicking is as defined or distinguised. If the 2 injectors have a compareable clicking, it is probably good.  To check the ignition, with a spare spark plug attatched to the #2 wire, set the plug on a piece of clean metal on the engine, making sure either the ground strap of the plug or metal body is touching the metal, start the car, and look for a spark. if you have spark, and the injector is good, its time to look at other possibilities, like low compression in that cylinder due to wear, burnt exhaust valve or blown head gasket.........

Hope you get it figured out

  2. first step always in a cylinder misfire is to throw a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in.  mechanics will ALWAYS go for the money, which is change plugs, coils, etc.. etc...  that is rarely required.

do not use a cheap injector cleaner. a lot of it is just kerosene and doens't do much.

    I recommmend:

    Seafoam

    Chevron Techron

    Redline complete fuel cleaner

    Regane

Prestone synthetic fuel system cleaner with octane boost

Put the bottle of cleaner in, fill up with gas, preferably a name brand gas, NO SHELL.  Give the cleaner about 100 miles to work.  You should notice it start to work realistically about 50 miles.

  3. First check the clip that holds the wires onto the injector for your number two cylinder they have nasty habit of working loose on some cars.  If your luck viola your done.  If not crank the car and place a long s***w drive on the #2 injector place your ear on the handle and you should hear a rapid tap tap tap if you do that indicates the injector is probably working correctly.  If not try the same on another injector to make sure you are holding the screwdrive correctly once you hear the tap i'm talking about check #2 one more time still no tap bad injector.  Good steady tap probably bad coil pack.  Now lets do the easy coil pack check if you have a voltmeter get a haynes manual for the proper ohms and check that way if not... go buy an adjustable spark tester (ask at any auto parts store they should know what your talking about) should cost 5-6 dollars.  Follow the directions on the package crank the car and you should have a bright visible spark if not time for new coil pack.  Good luck.

  4. after all the test that you perform from the other guys ,,you will still have to change the coil pack,,,this is only on the most likely cause on that model and symtoms,,,

P0302,,there are a lot of parts and test associated with that code,,one of the unusual problem is open wire on the PCM to coil pack,,a good tech will have to test all possible cause,,

as a i said changing the coil pack is the last thing you could do by yourself ,,other test,, you need a good tech,,

    do you gamble,,,,,,,
