Last night, when I was done installing my Logitech webcam, it told me to restart my computer... well when I did that... the keyboard refused to work, and I am getting a error message of

<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Like I said, the keyboard wont work, so it wont let me boot from disk when I put it in, or let me past that screen. I have been searching on here all night for answers... please help!

Thanks in advance.

  1. Go into Safe Mode and try to uninstall the webcam and see if that does not fix the problem.

  2. Do you have a recovery Disk, or an actual Windows XP home disk?

A recovery disk isn't going to help you, if you have...or know someone who has an actual Windows XP disk, insert it in the computer, reboot the computer. If you are using the XP CD, it "should" allow you to hit any key. Hit the R key to enter the recovery, then type Type

    expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32

It will ask you if you want to overwrite the file, hit the Y key.

Again, you HAVE to be using a REAL Windows XP cd, if it is a recovery CD that came with your comp, its not going to work.

If all else fails, there is a good chance your Hard drive is dying... replace the hard drive and insert your CD's to load the programs.

After you have re-loaded you OS onto your computer, you may be able to insert your old hard drive as a slave, and recover your files "music, pictures, video ETC" from it.

    Good luck!!!!

  3. If the ntoskrnl.exe file is corrupt or missing this can generate the error.

    1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.

    2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.

    3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.

    4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.

    5. Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32

    6. You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.

    7. Type exit to reboot the computer.

Otherwise check that your keyboard hasn't just coincidently stopped working see if another keyboard operates on your computer.

    Goodluck.

  4. Looks like it's failing to load the kernal ... you might need to reinstall Windows I have never seen this error before.

  5. your copy of Windows has gone corrupt (this is normal- sometimes). You need to press and keep DEL while booting. the bios menu will open. go to boot options and set the first boot device to your CD drive and then exit.

Restart your computer again but this time with the XP Installation Disk in the CD Drive.

    Proceed with the installation
