Ervin Santana breaks no-hitter record as Los Angeles Angels beat Cleveland Indians 2-1 - MLB Recap
American League’s Los Angeles Angels’ starter Ervin Santana broke a 27-year-old record in a game that his team won easily against the Cleveland Indians 2-1, at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Wednesday, July 27.
Angels’ starter Ervin Santana tossed a first no-hitter for his club since 1984 to take the revenge of the last night’s defeat and previously recorded defeats from the Indians. The 28-year-old right-hander also worked his first no-hitter since 1994 in Major
League Baseball.
Although, on his debut the Indians were up to tear him apart but he used that start as a way to get in to the Majors, commented Scioscia about his recovery after his devastating start.
On May 17, 2005 when he made his debut against the Indians, he was welcomed with ballistic hits, as Grady Sizemore, Coco Crisp, Travis Hafner and Ben Broussard each splashed strong hits on his first four pitches.
"It's part of life," he said. "We're here today, we don't know tomorrow."
Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia also remembered Santana’s debut when asked about today’s extraordinary performance.
Scioscia first said, "Do we have to talk about that one?" Then he added. "His command is like night and day”
Santana expressed an impressive control over his 105 pitches and threw more than 95 mph to hold the Indians' strong batting line-up under great pressure. He went for nine innings and struck-out ten batters for the first no-hitter of his career.
Ervin improved to 6-8 with 3.47 ERA in his 22 starts this season.
"I never get a win against this team," Santana said. "I have been pitching well against them. I just didn't have any luck, but I got it today."
It was his day, as Santana also tied the highest earned game points, that is 94 in this season and both of these points have been recorded against the Indians. However, Justin Verlander did not throw a no-hitter on the day when he earned 94 points.
It the third no-hitter, Santana made this season, joining Francisco Liriano and Justin Verlander.
