Erynne Lee advances at U.S. Women's Amateur
Erynne Lee just managed to make the cut and will now play in the match play stage of the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.
The Silverdale golfer played an average game in the qualifying stage and scored 72 points in the first round. This performance was considered well enough for many observers to comment that Lee has a good chance of advancing to the next stage of the event.
However, her performance in the second round surprised everyone and there were serious doubts about her making the cut. She scored 77 points and finished the event on an eventful note. At this point, she was well aware of how bad she was performing.
She sailed through the front nine and was not very concerned about her game. However, when she realized that her bad form is also spilling over to back nine, she started to get worried.
After the match, she said in a comment, “I was playing terrible. When I was standing over the ball, I was lacking confidence”.
The cut was announced at five-under par and Erynne Lee barely managed to squeeze into the list of players selected for a playoff. This playoff was held to decide which players will move into the 14 slots of the match play stage.
The playoff was the final point where players for the first round of 64 were to be selected. Lee completed the first hole on par and managed to gain a spot in the next round.
However, many say that she got lucky in the playoff. Her strokes narrowly avoided a 30 yard bunker. On top of that, her stroke left the ball 20 yards short of the hole. She chipped the ball in order to finish the hole on par.
Erynne Lee is no stranger to U.S. Women's Amateur. She has managed to reach the later stages of the event a couple of times. In 2009, she made it to the third round of the tournament.
In both 2010 and 2011, she played great in the tournament and finished in the quarterfinals. Her best came in 2008, when she played in the semifinals of the tournament.
