  1. Erythrocytes have no nuclei or mitochondria. This makes room for more haemoglobin to increase their oxygen carrying capacity but means that they cannot undergo mitosis. Old worn out red blood cells are broken down in the liver and spleen and new cells are manufactured in the bone marrow.
