Escobedo knocks out Smith to become WBO NABO super featherweight champion - Boxing news
Vicente Escobedo, America’s number fourth lightweight went into the ring to take on his fellow countryman Lonnie Smith in a 10-round bout and startled his hometown fans by collecting not only a first round knockout win but also the World Boxing Organisation’s
North American Boxing Organisation super featherweight gold.
The event was organised by TeleFutura’s Solo Boxeo and the ring was set up at Woodland Community Senior Center situated in Woodland, California, United States. The five-bout pay-per-view was co-headlined by six-round featherweight bout between Manuel Avila
and David Reyes.
Vicente has been in a total 27 bouts and came out victorious in 24. He has collected 14 of his total wins by knockout and boasts win over names such as Rocky Juarez, Walter Estrada, and others.
Lonnie, on the other hand, has been in a total 18 brawls and came out victorious in 14. He has collected 10 of his wins by knockout and has lost just two bouts. The 25-year-old was entering in his career’s first title bout and was seriously outclassed by
Vicente’s experience.
Smith was on a nine-bout long win streak.
Vicente was the only one who was a bit more experienced and had the requisite strength, ability, and agility to become the champion. The bout kicked off and instantly after the passage of just two minutes and 20 seconds Lonnie fell to the ring floor and
lost his senses. The referee, Dan Stell, had no other choice but to declare the fight over handing the 10-round extravaganza to Vicente as his career’s 25th win.
Lonnie was unable to block the thunderous strikes thrown by the Mexican hailing Vicente. The bout totally became a child’s play when Vicente understood that Lonnie has become intimidated by his vicious initial strikes.
After the bout Vicente revealed what really happened and how he was able to knock the brains out of Lonnie. The 30-year-old said, “It was the right hand, and it is something we've been working on. We found that I wasn’t throwing it the right way, so we went
and fixed some things and that’s what happened tonight.”
While sharing his slight despair at Lonnie’s inability, Vicente remarked, “I’m really surprised. I was expecting a tough fight. Lonnie is a good, young fighter and I thought I was going to go some rounds tonight, but I caught him with the right hand. I’m
surprised he got up.”
This will be Vicente’s first ever WBO NABO super featherweight gold and now boasts a total 25 wins with 15 of them coming from knockout. Lonnie, on the other hand, has collected his career’s third defeat and was unable to defend his long win streak.
