Espresso trains in italy

I have the option of booking a seat or a 4 bed couchet in an overnight espresso train from Milan to rome. However, the difference in the fare amount is considerable. I am traveling on a budget and am trying to strike a balance between cost and comfort at the same time.Could someone please suggest if the seats(not the couchetts) in the espresson trains are comfortable enough to sit and travel through the night in the espresso trains, I mean are the seats well cushioned to survive a long journey from 23.30 hours to 7.15 . If yes, then I’ll book these seats instead of the couchettes, if not then I’d go for the couchettes. Please help as I have to book the tickets asap

  1. I would only take the seats if a cuchette is not available. They are okay for sitting, but you will most likely be in a full compartment with 5 other people and will not be able to stretch out or get any sleep. I live south of Verona and take the night trains frequently - I have done both seats and berths - the berths are worth the extra expense.

  2. yes, other users are right. Eurostar is the best train in Italy and it's very fast from Milan to Rome. Instead to travel on night, if you travel on day, you pay only a seat and not couchette and the trip is cheaper.

  3. Yes, on an Espresso train you can book quite comfortable well cushioned and extendable seats but in first class only.

Otherwise you could do the journey by daytime via Eurostar (4h 30').

  4. If you really want to take the night train, then pay the extra to get a couchette.  You'll feel much safer.  Sitting in a seat all night is not only uncomfortable, but unsafe, as it's easy for people to steal your belonging when you're asleep.

Rome to Milan is not such a long way.  Why not take the day train, it's a shorter trip than the sleeper, and enjoy the scenery.

  5. The Espresso Trains in Italy are not very clean(and always late) and the seats are very uncomfortable! I advise you to take a Eurostar!! The price is higher but it's really better! Anyway If you can only choose an Espresso I think the couchettes are the best choice but be on guard, it's easy to "lost" money and personal effects!
