I have a summer assignment

The question is:

The eighteenth century British novelist Laurence Stern wrote, "Nobody, but he who has felt it, can conceive what a plaguing thing it is to have a man's mind torn asunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in contrary directions at the same time."

From a novel or play listed below, choose a character, (not necessarily the protagonist) whose mind is pulled in conflicting directions by two compelling desires, ambitions, obligations, or influences. Then in a well organized essay, identify each of the two conflicting forces and explain how this conflict within one character illuminates the meaning of the work as a whole.

Im doing the book a lesson before dying

any hints or web pages to use to write this essay?

I dont want to buy one and I havent read the book

Thanks

  1. The two opposing forces are the protagonist's desire to do his duty to his aunt and his desire to be free from the task.

Read the book. It's short and really not that hard to understand.

  2. ive always tried searching a book then theres this site who posts instant summaries u should try it

  3. I would have thought it was easy.... for one thing, though, I'd read the book. And the two compelling desires could just be what the character actually has... and the conclusion could be what he does, which he chooses, etc. Why don't you search google for reviews of the book and see if you can find your character...?
