  1. Philippine literature in English results from efforts of the  American forces, begun at the end of the 19th century, to pacify the people of the Philippines and to instill in them the American ideals.

    During the early 20th century, Philippine literature in English  flourished.  During the 1920s and 1930s, several significant works were published.  Amongst the most distinguished were those written by historian, novelist and essayist Zoilo Galang.

    "Life and Success," by Zoilo Galang (1921), is the first volume of essays in English written by a Filipino.  His "A Child of Sorrow" (1921) is the first novel written in English by a Filipino.  For many years, "A Child of Sorrow" was the best selling novel in English written by a Filipino.  He also wrote "Box of Ashes and Other Stories" (1925), the first collection of stories in book form written in English by a Filipino.   Additionally, he is often called "the Filipino Encyclopediist" for his first Philippine encyclopedia (10 volumes in 1934).  He died before he could complete a 20 volume expansion titled "Encylopedia of the Philippines."
