So on the first weekend for school I have an essay due on the theme for lyrics. Here is what the paper says.

Writing Directions: In a well-developed essay, identify and briefly analyze the unifying theme of these three pieces. Your essay must contain a clear controlling idea (thesis), multiple body paragraphs that support/develop that idea with evidence from the text, and a conclusion that provides a sense of closure.

with these specific songs you can write about how people change and how relationships change over time. in all of these songs it seems that there is a common theme that people just drift apart because of various reasons [e.g. personality change or specific circumstances]. you could use the whole first verse in Your New Twin-Sized Bed to exemplify this.

here is another verse from You can do Better Than Me that might be helpful:
