okay so im gonna be a freshman in high school and on the first day i have an essay on imperialism due. i really need help to understand what to write. im really lost and i just want to know what main points i should hit and what my three body paragraphs should be about. please help im desperate.

Imperialism is basically the expansion of an empire. The reasons for expansion varies, as does the way to go about it. Mainly it is used to control other peoples land, government and government structure.

The two best examples were the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), led by Russia, and the United States during the 1900's. Although both powers used military force, the United States concentrated more on assassinations, and financing and arming political groups to overthrow their government, while the U.S. would hand select and put a "puppet" government in charge that would support U.S.demands and interests. The USSR more generally used military invasion to control other nations.

The two never directly confronted each other. But often both sides financed, and supplied weapons to warring factions of a nation, to control that countries government. Such as Korea, and Vietnam. By controlling these other governments, the USA and USSR established allies, opened up ports, canals, trade routes, and had access to resources like oil, rubber and other valuable materials needed to produce goods for the nation and exports.

So in short, imperialism is a means by which a military.economic power uses it's resources, influence, and/or force to expand for financial and political purposes at the expense of smaller countries.
