Essex rout http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Northamptonshire-c824 by 171 runs: County Championship Division Two - Third Innings Recap
The second day of the County Championship Division Two match between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Sunday, June 26, 2011.
The first day completely belonged to the bowlers, especially the seamers, as 17 wickets fell in both the team’s innings. There was some assistance for the bowlers on the second day as well, but the batsmen also had a good day.
Essex’s batsmen http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Bryan-Foster-c65514 and Adam Wheater scored tons in their respective outings. The latter top scored the innings with 164 runs and remained to be the highest scorer until the end of the match.
The hosts had an overall first innings lead of 84 runs, which was very good in the context of the game. However, they would have liked a better start compared to their first outing, but the top-order failed miserably.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jaik-Charles-Mickleburgh-c65335 continued his struggle with the new ball and was dismissed without scoring this time around. He only lasted one ball this time and had to take the long walk back to the pavilion.
Tom Westley, who had scored a valiant half-century for his team in the first innings, failed to make an impression in the second outing. He edged one ball to the hands of the wicketkeeper, Niall O’Brien, who made no mistake behind the stumps.
Westley was dismissed for four and the home team was struggling at 7/2. The innings was then stabilised by veteran England’s batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Walker-c95903, who collected 37 runs for the third wicket partnership.
Just when things looked good for the home team, wickets started to tumble again. Walker was sent back to the pavilion after adding 17 runs to the total and he was followed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RN-ten-Doeschate-c2338, who failed for the second consecutive time in the match.
The Netherlands’ star batsman managed only one run and returned to the pavilion. He was followed by Shah, who got out after an impressive 33-run knock. Essex team was in a spot of bother with five batsmen back in the hut for 63 runs on the board.
However, the team’s skipper, Foster and Wheater put together a massive partnership for the sixth wicket, rescuing their team from a disastrous position. They collected 253 runs together and scored centuries for their team.
Wheater played aggressively, taking the game away from the opposition. He scored 164 runs off just 143 balls, with the help of 18 fours and four massive sixes. Foster also batted brilliantly, ending up with 103 runs. He declared the innings at 331/9 with
an overall lead of 415 runs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jack-Alexander-Brooks-c65087 took four wickets in the innings for Northamptonshire, but his effort went in vain, as the hosts got away with a massive lead in the end.
