Essex have signed Australian left-handed batsman, Rob Quiney, for the upcoming English Domestic season. The overseas player will be available for the first half of the season, which will run until mid-August.
It will be the first time the Victorian will ply his trade in the premier English first-class competition. All 55 of his first-class matches have come in his home land, where he has scored 3,101 runs at 36.48.
However, improved performances in the 2011-12 season – 938 at 49.36 – prompted the national selectors to include him for the current home season’s opener – a three-match Test series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SR-Watson-c2558 but failed
to deliver, making just 9 runs in three innings, including a pair in the second Test at Adelaide.
He was subsequently dropped from the national set-up and despite crippling injury list, he failed to force his way back, with the selectors injecting youngsters like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Usman-Khawaja-c2729.
However, with the Aussies still undecided over their composition which will travel to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 and battle for the coveted Ashes, Quiney’s stint at Essex may just benefit him and put him back into contention.
For now, the 30-year-old is just relishing the prospect of proving his mettle for the Division Two franchise.
"I am delighted to have signed to play for Essex this summer," Quiney said. "The 2012-13 season has been an amazing one for me, fulfilling my ambition of playing international cricket and I am now able to achieve one of my other major cricketing ambitions
by playing county cricket."
Essex Head Coach, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adrian-Paul-Grayson-c42130, was also excited about the prospect of having Quiney at the team’s disposal as they aim to force their way back into the top division. Moreover his inclusion will sort out the top-order debate which had bothered the outfit
for the best part of last season.
"He's desperate to play county cricket which is great for us and he comes across as an extremely good team player as well and we are delighted to bring him to the club. It's an exciting signing and I'm sure he will have a positive impact on the team," Grayson
said.
