At stumps on the second day of the four-day match between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 and Derbyshire in the County Championship Division Two tournament, Essex trail by 95 runs with eight wickets in hand at County Ground, Chelmsford, on Thursday, May 24.
Derbyshire took guard with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Guptill-c1980 and WL Madsen coming out to resume their side’s first innings from a tally of 37 in response to the first innings total of 182 posted by Essex.
The two batsmen batted well initially, but with 84 runs on the board, Guptill became the first casualty of the day as he perished after playing an innings of 36 runs.
The skipper was then joined by WJ Durston in a bid to carry the steady batting onslaught against the fielding side.
The two batsmen proved just too good for the bowlers as they staggered a tally of 161 runs by hammering the bowlers all around the park.
Madsen then departed after edging a delivery to wicketkeeper Foster, who found his way back to the pavilion on bolstering an innings of 50 runs.
Meanwhile, Durston, prevented the flow of runs from hindering as he created gaps to keep the scoreboard ticking.
The batsman exhibited a phenomenal form as he smashed an innings of 116 runs to subdue the opposition.
Later, wicketkeeper/batsman T Poynton clobbered an unbeaten half century off 35 deliveries to help his side amass 323 runs.
From Essex,  TR Craddock was the most successful bowler with five wickets to his name, while DD Masters stayed second best with two Derbyshire scalps in his bag.
Essex, then began their second innings, assuming to give their opponents a run for their money by hammering a mammoth tally on the board, however, they had a terrible start to their innings as they lost their first wicket with only two runs on the board as opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AN-Petersen-c1028, faltered after scoring two runs.
