Derbyshire won their four-day match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 in the ongoing County Championship Division Two tournament by ten wickets on the penultimate day of the game at County Ground, Chelmsford.
Essex resumed play on the third day from a second innings tally of 46 runs for the loss of two wickets with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/OA-Shah-c2134 unbeaten on 26 and ML Pettini on 17, seeking to better their score by the end of the day.
Derbyshire on the other hand, needed to make early inroads to restrict their opposition from amassing an unmatchable total that would later be impossible for them to chase down.
Having already clobbered 323 runs in their first innings, it was imperative for Derbyshire to reduce Essex on a meagre total, who had managed to post only 182 runs during their first stint with the bat.
Keeping their lacklustre batting performance in the first innings in check, Essex needed to exhibit a better show while batting for the second time to save the match.
While Shah and Pettini showed colour, the partnership met its demise with 73 runs on the board on the wicket of Pettini, who was dismissed by Wainwright after crafting an innings of 27 runs.
Wainwright then struck again in his next over by obliterating the stumps of Essex’s star batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BT-Foakes-c48804, who met his end after scoring only three runs.
These two wickets brought Derbyshire right back in the game, and put Essex on the back foot, who needed to come out of the situation as soon as possible in order to avoid an imminent defeat.
Shah, who has been in impressive form throughout this summer, exhibited calm and composure as he stood defiant against the bowlers who came bolting deliveries right at the right-handed batsman.
Finally with 127 runs on the board, a delivery by Durston penetrated Shah’s defences, causing the batsman to lose his wicket after belting an innings of 75 runs.
Later, skipper JS Foster clobbered an under pressure knock of 96 runs to help his team pile a total of 234 runs, giving Derbyshire a target of 94 to win the match.
The chasing team comfortably reached the target in 18 overs with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Guptill-c1980 hammering 66 runs and PM Borrington smashing a knock of 30 runs.
