Gloucestershire had to chase down 300 runs from 40 overs against Essex in a match of the Clydesdale Bank 40 at the Castle Park Cricket Ground, Colchester in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Sunday, August 21, 2011.
The team needed a special effort from one of their batsmen in order to reach the massive target set by Essex.
However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gloucestershire-c785’s batting failed to live up to the expectations and the entire team was bowled out for 181 runs in 31 overs. None of the players managed to score a half-century in the match, as the highest scorer of the innings was middle-order
batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Taylor-c1253, who collected 47 runs.
There was not much change in the pitch, as it remained good for the batsmen. However, it was a bit on the slower side compared to the first innings of the match. It was still not unplayable and the visitors needed a much better effort from their batsmen.
Gloucestershire’s skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alex-Gidman-c984 walked out in the middle to open the innings alongside Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien. The pair looked to attack the opposition, but failed to make most of the good conditions.
Gidman was the first wicket to fall in the innings after collecting 12 runs off 10 balls with the help of a couple of boundaries. He was followed by the Irishman, who managed 13 runs from 12 deliveries, striking one four and a six.
New Zealand’s promising youngster http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KS-Williamson-c1813 failed to make an impression in the match, as he managed just 7 runs in his short stay at the crease.
The visitors were in deep trouble, losing three wickets for just 38 runs on the board. However, the innings was stabilised by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ian-Andrew-Cockbain-c63756, who collected 58 runs for the fourth wicket partnership.
Just when things started to look good for Gloucestershire, Cockbain got out. He failed to make most of the start he got to his innings, collecting 25 runs off the same number of deliveries with the help of four boundaries.
Adding insult to injury, Alex Gidman and Taylor got run-out, destroying the hopes of their fans and the dressing room. The former got out after collecting 10 runs whereas Taylor had to walk back to the dressing room after scoring an impressive knock of 47
runs.
Wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Herbert-Frederick-Fuller-c65789 played cameos of 25 and 33 respectively, but failed to cause much damage to the opposition. The latter was the last wicket to fall in the innings, as Gloucestershire lost the match
by 118 runs.
Essex’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-Masters-c1333 bowled beautifully, picking up 4 wickets on a flat wicket.
