However, SJ Croft (66) and KR Brown forged a defiant partnership and clobbered Lancashire to victory in 36.3 overs.
Brown was later named as the Player of the Match for his insurmountable performance with the bat.
Earlier, after forging an intimidating opening stand, Essex’s top order was demolished by some outstanding bowling from Newby, who grabbed his side’s first wickehttp://www.senore.com/Cricket/Thomas-George-Burrows-c93472 with 47 on the board.
The bowler dismissed T Westley on 21, followed by the wicket of ML Pettini on 27 runs, and then took the third wicket by sending GM http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90598 (9) back to the pavilion, leaving Essex standing on a score of 70 for the loss of three wickets.
Essex never recovered from this onslaught and whenever anyone in the middle posed a serious challenge, Newby was there to take him out.
