Essex v Lancashire - Clydesdale Bank 40 - Group A – Lancashire maintain top spot – Live Score and Update
Essex 186 (38.1/40 ov) v Lancashire 187/2 (36.3/40 ov) - http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lancashire-c806 won by 8 wickets (with 21 balls remaining)
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Oliver-Newby-c2138’s five-wicket haul, followed by an unbeaten 87-run knock by Karl Brown, earned Lancashire an eight-wicket victory against Essex on Thursday, in the Group A match of the ongoing Clydesdale Bank 40 tournament, at County Ground, Chelmsford.
With Essex having bolstered a total of 186 on the board, Lancashire always knew they could reach the required target in 40 over, keeping wickets intact.
However, openers SC http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AG-Prince-c949 failed to rattle the opposition, as they could muster an opening stand of only 21 runs, before Prince lost his wicket to TJ Phillips after scoring a short, but fiery innings of 14 runs off nine deliveries.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 then made the match interesting by nabbing their second wicket with only 27 on the board, as MA Chambers dismissed Moore on a score of nine.
However, SJ Croft (66) and KR Brown forged a defiant partnership and clobbered Lancashire to victory in 36.3 overs.
Brown was later named as the Player of the Match for his insurmountable performance with the bat.
Earlier, after forging an intimidating opening stand, Essex’s top order was demolished by some outstanding bowling from Newby, who grabbed his side’s first wickehttp://www.senore.com/Cricket/Thomas-George-Burrows-c93472 with 47 on the board.
The bowler dismissed T Westley on 21, followed by the wicket of ML Pettini on 27 runs, and then took the third wicket by sending GM http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90598 (9) back to the pavilion, leaving Essex standing on a score of 70 for the loss of three wickets.
Essex never recovered from this onslaught and whenever anyone in the middle posed a serious challenge, Newby was there to take him out.

However, the total was not enough to be defended against the likes of Lancashire, as Essex lacked the bowling needed to halt the opposition from reaching the required target, eventually losing their fifth game in the tournament.
