Essex had a first innings trail of 58 runs against Leicestershire in a match of the County Championship Division Two, at the Garon Park, Southend-on-Sea in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Thursday, July 28, 2011.
The visitors would have been pleased with their performance both with the bat and ball in the first innings. However, they failed to impress in the second outing, as the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 team got away with 372 runs.
The star for the hosts in their second inning was skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RS-Bopara-c2373, who scored a magnificent century. The veteran English batsman ended up with 178 runs, helping his side gain an overall lead of 314 runs.
There was not a big change in the playing conditions. The pitch had become better for the batsmen, but there was still enough movement to cause concerns for the batting team.
Essex’s start was not an ideal one, as the team lost one wicket early. Opening batsman Tom Westley had absolutely no clue of what the ball was doing. He got out after a 20-ball duck.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/OA-Shah-c2134 steadied the innings to a certain extent. The pair collected 45 runs for the second wicket partnership before the latter got out.
Shah was unable to make most of the start he got to his innings and managed just 16 runs with the help of three boundaries. The hosts had lost a couple of wickets at that stage and were still trailing by 10 runs.
However, the innings was held together by Godleman and Bopara, as the pair batted exceptionally well under pressure. They put together 104 runs for the third wicket partnership, gaining good momentum.
Godleman got out after an impressive knock of 77 runs. He played well against the new ball and struck seven fours and one six before being dismissed.
Things looked good for the hosts at that stage, but they lost three quick wickets, losing momentum in the innings. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RN-ten-Doeschate-c2338 and wicketkeeper batsman Adam Wheater failed to make an impression, getting out for 10, 1 and 0 respectively.
The innings was put back on track by the hosts’ skipper and lower-order batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-Masters-c1333. Both batsmen batted really well, collecting 111 runs for the seventh wicket partnershship.
Masters got out after contributing 48 runs to the total with the help of five boundaries. He was followed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Maurice-Chambers-c1934, who managed 10 runs in his short stay at the crease.
Bopara was the ninth wicket to fall in the innings, but the Essex’s skipper played tremendously well for his 178-run knock. He smashed 18 fours in his marathon innings.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nadeem-Malik-c78411 picked up four wickets in the innings for Leicestershire, but the opposition took a lead of 314 runs in the end.
