Essex v Middlesex – Friends Life t20 (South Group) – Match Update – Essex win by 2 wickets
A half-century by Player of the Match Mark Pettini ensured that Essex remained in the running for the Friends Life t20 quarter-finals, after they secured a 2-wicket victory over Middlesex on July 5 at the County Ground in Chelmsford.
After being set a 110-run chase by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Steven-Paul-Crook-c91337 in the 2nd
over, but Pettini powered on, going on to establish a 74-run stand with Greg Smith (27).
Tom Smith, who went on to finish with figures of 3 for 24, intervened and dismissed both batsmen in the 12th over – http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Greg-Smith-c1508 bowled on the first delivery of the over, and Pettini sent packing on the 5th. The duo left their side at
78, and while none of the remaining batsmen managed to register individual scores in double figures, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 managed to work their way up to 110.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/OA-Shah-c2134 (8) packing, lbw, in the
15th over, followed by both http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Foster-c1644 (8) in the 17th over.
Despite the steady fall of wickets, however, Essex managed to crawl their way up to 110 by the 18th over, at the expense of 8 wickets.
Earlier, Middlesex had endured a similar fate – the mainstay of their innings had been a half-ton by opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JL-Denly-c1703 (53), after which the second highest score had been Gareth Berg’s 12, with the remaining batsmen failing to work their way up to double-digit
individual totals.
Ten Doeschate and Reece Topley both managed 2 wicket hauls, while Tim Phillips, Greg Smith, and Napier all claimed one scalp each – all of which enabled Essex to restrict their opponents to 109, a total which their batsmen later managed to chase effectively,
with 14 balls to spare.
