The visitors were all out for 315 in their first innings on day one. They could have been in a worse position, being five down for 94 runs on the board. However, the lower-order recovered well with Chris Jordan top scoring the innings, collecting 71 runs.
Essex’s captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Foster-c1644 had won the toss and opted to field first without any hesitation. He expected the bowlers to get some assistance in the first couple of sessions of play, as the wicket appeared to be a little damp.
The decision proved to be a very good one, as Surrey’s batsmen struggled to get going once they came out to bat. The team’s wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SM-Davies-c2542 was the first man to be dismissed in the innings. He managed 11 runs in his short stay at the crease.
Former English player Mark Ramprakash was the next man to be dismissed in the innings. The first-drop batsman scored just one run in an unimpressive outing.
South Africa’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rory-Hamilton-Brown-c2366, who failed to capitalise on the start to his innings, getting out for
32 runs with the help of three fours and one six.
Middle-order batsman Tom Maynard looked solid at the crease, but was unable to make most of the start. He got out after contributing 19 runs to the total and the visitors were five down within 100 runs.
The innings was stabilised by Jason http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gareth-Batty-c1456, as the pair put together 54 runs for the sixth wicket partnership. The former got out after a quick fire 43-run knock of 40 balls. He smashed five fours and one six in his cameo.
Batty was involved in another half-century stand, this time with Jordan. The pair collected 81 runs for the seventh wicket, guiding their side into a respectable position.
Batty missed out on a half-century by just one run, as he got out after scoring 49. He anchored the innings for his side, but would have been disappointed not to convert his innings into a big one.
Jordan played really well towards the end of the innings, collecting 71 runs with the help of four boundaries. He got excellent support from Stuart Meaker, who contributed 38 crucial runs to the total.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Surrey-c851’s innings came to an end at 315, courtesy a superb spell from Napier, who finished with 6/53.
Essex’s openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Billy-Godleman-c1164 and Tom Westley scored 4 and 2 respectively before the first day’s play came to an end.
